Glyphosate Suppresses the Ability of PON1 to Hydrolyse Oxidized-LDL in the Exposed Farm Workers in Pahang, Malaysia

INTRODUCTION: Paraoxonase 1 (PON1) is a high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-associated enzyme which known to hydrolyse most pesticides including organophosphates (OPs) and prevent atherosclerosis by inhibiting oxidative modification of low-density (LDL). Glyphosate one the common organophosphate used in agriculture many developing countries Malaysia. The aim this study assess PON1 ability oxidized LDL glyphosate exposed farm workers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In cross-sectional comparative study, total 103 subjects (53 Glyphosate-exposed 50 non-exposed) were recruited. Fasting serum samples analysed for activities towards substrates paraoxon, phenylacetate, diazoxon, as well lipid profiles oxidized-LDL (ox-LDL). RESULTS: results showed lower basal paraoxonase activity [156.96 (58.87) vs 177.06 (66.78)], arylesterase [90.06 (17.14) 96.92 (23.87)] diazoxonase [850.93 (206.75) 990.48 (248.73)] glyphosate-exposed compared non-exposed, however, only was statistically significant (p<0.05). not significantly different with length period exposure except arylesterase. There also higher (p<0.05) ox-LDL group but no differences (p>0.05) between two groups. ratio probably reflects among group. CONCLUSION: suggested that decreased individuals could predispose them development coronary artery disease through ox-LDL.
